How to turn a paint estimate into a shopping list

Last reviewed: November 2, 2026

Check which sizes your store sells, then find a mix that meets or beats your quantity. The smallest total isn't always the most sensible purchase, so compare the fewest containers with the least paint.

Two ways to fill the same need

Suppose you need 4.60 US gallons, and paint comes in quarts, gallons, and 5-gallon buckets.

Plan Containers Total Left over
Fewest containers 1 × 5 gal 5.00 gal 0.40 gal
Least paint 4 × 1 gal, 3 × 1 qt 4.75 gal 0.15 gal

Least paint means seven containers with little to spare. Fewest containers means one bucket and more left for touch-ups. Neither is automatically cheaper, so enter your store’s price for each size in the calculator, and it will total each plan for you.

An example in liters

Suppose you need 6.40 L, and cans come in 1 L, 2.5 L, and 5 L. Fewest containers is 1 × 5 L and 1 × 2.5 L, for 7.50 L. Least paint is 1 × 2.5 L and 4 × 1 L, for 6.50 L.

Should you add extra?

Extra paint is a choice, not a rule. It covers mistakes, a thirstier wall than expected, and touch-ups later. If you’d like some, add a clear allowance in the calculator so you can see it. With 10% on 4.60 gallons, the need becomes 5.06 gallons, and both plans become 1 × 5 gal and 1 × 1 qt.

Buy tinted paint in one go

Sherwin-Williams explains that paint, tint, and tinting equipment all work within tolerances, so cans bought at different times may not match exactly. Buying what the whole job needs at once avoids that.

Using more than one can

Dulux’s UK advice is that if you use more than one can, you should mix them in a large container, or finish in a corner before starting a new can.

If you run out partway through, Sherwin-Williams suggests stopping at a natural break, such as a corner, window, or door opening.

Don’t forget the rest

Paint is only part of the list. Our printable checklist covers tools and preparation supplies, and has space for your quantities.

If you end up with leftovers

Keep some for touch-ups, and label it with the room and color. For paint you don’t need, PaintCare runs recycling programs with drop-off sites in states with paint stewardship laws. If your state isn’t covered, check with your local waste service, since rules vary by area. Don’t pour paint down a drain.
